SpiceJet is the only Indian airlines to explore air connectivity through water bodies such as rivers and inland waterways. The airlines recently conduct seaplane trials and aims at creating a new market for both the airline and tourism industry. SpiceJet operates 396 daily flights to 51 destinations including 7 international destinations.

NB: Brief us about your seaplane trials?

Ajay: The airline conducted seaplane trials in association with Japan’s Setouchi Holdings at Mumbai’s Girgaum Chowpatty. SpiceJet and Setouchi Holdings have been working closely for over six months to explore opportunities for small ten and fourteen seater plane operations to provide air connectivity to smaller towns and cities of India.
The trial was the second phase of trials for the aircraft. Under the first phase, trials of the land plane were conducted in Nagpur and Guwahati. Being the largest airline and trend-setter of Regional connectivity scheme-UDAN, it will continue to add new wings.
Japan’s Setouchi Holdings Inc is a pioneer in the small aircraft aviation and is a part of Tsuneishi Group of Hiroshima Prefecture.

NB: Do you see big potential in smaller cities?

Ajay: We see tremendous potential in our smaller cities. The seaplane service will open a whole new market for both the airline and tourism industry. The Seaplane operation can bring the remotest parts of India into the mainstream aviation network.
The Regional Connectivity Scheme is a signature scheme which was announced by the Government.

NB: Brief us about your Financials?

Ajay: We have reported a profit of INR 105.3 crore for the three months ended September 30th, 2017 as against INR 58.9 crore in the same quarter last year. The company witnessed a 7% increase in its passenger yields, while its average load factor across the network was 93.1%.
The airline has recorded more than 90% load factor for 30 successive months, a feat unparalleled globally.

NB: Which are the other destinations are you planning to open?

Ajay: We launched new flights on maiden routes and further emphasised our commitment for UDAN as we introduced our fourth daily flight under the scheme. The airline became the first to introduce direct flights on multiple routes like Guwahati-Dibrugarh, Jaisalmer-Delhi and Jaipur-Varanasi and Chennai-Belagavi besides launching its 4th daily flight under UDAN on the Jaisalmer-Jaipur route.

Ajay: SpiceJet’s mission is to become India’s preferred low-cost airline, delivering the lowest air fares with the highest consumer value, to price sensitive consumers.
